**Limited edition of 400. 160g vinyl housed in full colour thick card sleeve** A gorgeous, forgotten classic of new age synth introspection from '81-'85 excavated and reissued by Belgium's Aguirre imprint - home to the similarly reclined Lieven Martens. 'Trance-Formations I: Ancient Minimal Meditations' revolves around a conceptual cycle following the course of the day. Inevitably it starts at 'Morning Worship', brewing slow rhythmic patterns which radiate shimmering melodies, before the strolling pulses of 'Midday Attunement' meander under woozy, modulating tones seductively swirling in stereo formation. If that sounds a bit similar to lots of other synth music of the era, it's because it is, but there's an attuned grace and and deliciously squashed vibe individual to his sound here. However, matters become much more engrossing and distinguished on the other side. On 'Evening Devotional' a gurgling mass of tones beautifully bends just in-and-out of focus as melancholy keys gently ascend and descend, enveloping our ears in a molten Sequential Circuits Pro-One goop, and 'Midnight Meditation' sustains a lingering, quietly plangent resonance into the depths of the night. "Somewhere hidden in the deepest part of the Self is that special place where One can go within to the most ancient part of one's Self and connect with the origin of Self. Ancient Minimal Meditations reaches into that special place of creation of the Self and its Oneness with the Creator of All."

Conrad Schnitzler & Borngräber & Strüver – Con-Struct CD 201

Conrad Schnitzler & Borngräber & Strüver – Con-Struct

7 Con-Struct 7 4:45
8 Con-Struct 8 5:08

After two re-releases of Conrad Schnitzler classics, (Zug & Ballet Statique) now m=minimal releases a completely new work from the pioneer of electronic music.
Conrad Schnitzler is a sound explorer. For many years, he has been on expeditions, journeys through his collection of electronic synthesizers almost every day. Sounds he liked has been conserved on tape and stored in his sound library. The result is a huge library of audio files, he calls them “solen”.
“Borngräber & Struever” have got the chance to examine that library and started to con-struct new pieces out of the hidden gems. These are not remixes but new compositions. None of the sound combinations were thought or heard before. The 8 tracks form an album independent of any trend and therefore it becomes a real acoustic environment for everyone.

The album was produced at Studio.Wannsee. To give the album more authenticity, the complete audio processing was done using analog equipment. They not only used many classics among the finest synthesizers and outboard equipment, but also custom built tube gear. The icing on the cake are the tubes used from the 60′s, which bought Christian Borngräber on a trip through the Atacama desert in a small radio repair business in the city of Calama. Thanks to the desert climate even the packaging of the tubes

Remix – Mat Steel

Following last year's devasting UL8 set, Mark Fell returns to Editions Mego for a 2x12" excursion into advanced rhythm mechanics. Back in January 2011, the SND man was invited by Erik 'Errorsmith' Wiegand to create some presets for the Native Instruments soft-synth he was building. In the end, NI rejected Fell's sounds, but their loss is our gain: he's further developed the pattern-Generating systems he used for UL8 and connected them to sounds produced in Wiegand's synthesizer with a result so tantalising you're almost reminded of Wiegand's own classic MMM production 'Donna'. Fell is just at his ballistic best, delivering nine tracks that manage to sound at once coolly scientific whilst also suggesting a kind of mutant, angular rave music. 'Acids In The... thin razor, attack noise hat, Linn' in particular is possessed of an itchy funk that is just completely addictive, while 'Manitutshu' is electro fit to soundtrack a 2045 block party, and 'Manitutshu... parameter set 2, Linn HI Tom, JazzOrg...' pays homage to Duet Emmo (the seminal 80s collaboration between Daniel Miller and Wire's Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis) in a morse code techno style. Don't get us wrong: though playful, this album isn't exactly an easy ride, but for the more adventurous ears out there the rewards are enormous. The set ends with an industrial-strength remix from Fell's SND partner Mat Steel, taking on 'Occultation', a track which in is original form sounds like Richard D. James' Cornish acid focussed into a single, searing laser beam. If you need further incentive, know that Manitutshu was mastered by Lupo at Dubplates and Mastering and is packaged with a A1 full colour poster. Most artists pay lip service to the future, Mark Fell is busy making it happen. Highly recommended.

(MP 303) Kabutogani - Bektop CD (Album) 2010

Kabutogani - Bektop
Label: Mille Plateaux

9 Ducts 3:57
10 Airlock 1:31

12 Kuril Probe

The 4th album by french producer KABUTOGANI is his most conceptual to date. Made entirely of mostly rhythmic glitch sounds (aka Clicks & Cuts), the album still has traces of melodies or tones - unlike many other minimal glitch productions. The cold, dry and noisy sound transports an almost morbid atmosphere. Experimental electronic music seldomly was so full of feelings - rather inconvenient ones, but feelings. This is what makes this album special.

*Immense, dark and unbelievably heavy analogue productions somewhere between Eleh, Pan Sonic and Eliane Radigue on this limited edition vinyl pressing. It doesn't really matter when this music was made or by whom, all you need to know is that only 400 copies have been made for the world, housed in a suitably anonymous white-on-white embossed sleeve* Suum Cuique (pronouned Soom Kwi-Kwe, Latin for "To Each His Own") follows the remit of Young Americans to explore uncharted, experimental, and personal synthscapes, guided by the hand of intuition with an entirely analogue array of machines. There's a confidence and ability to these productions which elevates them above the masses of lo-fi synth meanderings currently murmuring in the underground, occupying the tantalising space between Eliane Radigue and James Ferraro, or Thomas Köner and Daphne Oram, creating a dialogue between their shared and opposing aesthetics to give an emotional response with deeply chilling and engrossing results. In 'Lithic Reduction' concrète textures grind like a millstone to release powdery clouds of analog dust, settling only to be dispersed by gusts of blackened distortion, whereas 'Red Binary' is distinctly electronic, revolving around muted radar bleeps like the resonance from SAW II soundtracking a speckly pill experience that's starting to go west. The album's centrepiece, the aptly titled 'Entropy' nods to the sublimely stoic work of Eleh, radiating microtonal bass shifts while a bitter northerly wind builds in intensity. Brilliantly out of place, 'Cyclic Redundancy' opens the flipside with a majestically submerged slab of completely obliterated and submerged 4/4, like an unholy collusion between Mika Vainio, Sandwell and Bernard Parmegiani soundtracking a trade union rave in the 1950's, before 'Even In Death...' conjures imagery of a eulogy given by a Mongolian throat singer with crows circling overhead. Strictly limited copies, catch it while you can.

*First CD release on the incredible PAN label, limited to 1000 copies, housed in pro-press digisleeve jacket and containing another dose of flawlessly curated, picked and realised music from the extremes of the electronic spectrum - do not miss* Pan Records' first CD release is also the first collaborative output by respected electroacoustic sound artists Thomas Ankersmit and Valerio Tricoli. Their five tracks on 'Forma II' were composed and recorded in Berlin from 2008 to 2010, and include four shorter electroacoustic pieces based on experiments with a Serge Modular Analogue synthesizer and one long-form tract of overdubbed saxophone exploring the timbral extremes of Ankersmit's instrument. The four hyper-sensitively detailed electroacoustic pieces range from 6 to 13 minutes in length and move between ultra-vivid blizzards of textural detail to plangent drone and vast atmospheric diffusions. Through deft computer and tape processing coupled with almost tangibly "real" sound sources such as metal foil floating on ultrasonic soundbeams or the man made resonance of the radar domes at Teufelsberg outside Berlin, the pair create a kinetic space which challenges our perception of simulated, or virtual shapes and spatial settings, and non-virtual, acoustic tangibility. In particular, the thirteen minute 'Plague #7' is an immersive passage of deep, thrumming bass tones and glassy hi-frequencies with the potently surreal effect, while the longer finale, 'Takht-e Tâvus' builds a swarm-like cluster of sumptuously discordant saxophone tones amassing a slow, gripping intensity and uncannily natural detailing. The CD is really brought to life by Rashad Becker's mastering at Clunk, and comes housed in one-tone silk screened pvc sleeve with interweaving geomteric designs, with artwork by Kathryn Politis and Bill Kouligas. Another exceptional transmission from PAN, a label that's fast attained buy-on-sight status.

*Strictly limited pressing, initial copies on clear blue vinyl* Manhattan's Ezekiel Honig makes a welcome appearance on Type with the beautifully melancholy 'Folding In On Itself'. The frayed, spectral layers of ambient sound and dusty pulses within recall the works of jan Jelinek, The Remote Viewer or even elements of the first MvO Trio LP, but his serene, almost sorrowful palette of tones comes from somewhere more private and personal. While those artists are all defined by a sense of intimacy in wide open space, Ezekiel's location in one of the most densely populated areas on the planet perhaps gives it a more introverted insularity, as though he's cosily enveloped by his memories while the world scurries about on the outside. Those memories and their corruption or decay are at the core of this record, like the overlaid family photos on the sleeve, capturing a sense of entropy in his quickly disintegrating city. Locally made field recordings are placed as rhythmic and textural clues to the shape of his environment, and when they happen to fall in sync with his instrumentation the effect is lush, creating and effortless illusion of everyday aleatory syncopation. This beautifully measured sense of drifting, stigmergic arrangement with programmed elements makes for a captivating narrative as varied as a walk through the city itself, but subtly enhanced like some sort of moody augmented reality app or wandering blindfolded through some vivid sound art installation. If anything, it's as softly spoken and moving as anything Type have put out to date, so handle with care.

Soon after raster-noton was founded in 1996 it was a welcome surprise that our first releases had strong resonance in japan. this enthusiasm encouraged us to share our sound and visualisations on tour. our first contacts became friendships – some even became part of the label, be it as collaborators or artists. since these establishing times, we have happily returned to japan again and again with more artists from the label. our experiences throughout the country have repeatedly inspired all of us. japanese culture and its sense for detail – whether expressed in design, architecture, food or hospitality – continues to influence the label’s output. this limited edition book is a present to our artists, our fans, and also to ourselves. it is one way to remember the great moments and to thank all the people involved in our last ten years of touring in japan. we have enjoyed a perfect combination of music, inspiration and fun!

Volume 5.0 (subtitled "Paradigm Shift") features a totally new generation of young artists giving a 360 degree view on fresh glitch sounds: from Minimal Clicks to IDM-/Dub-ish tracks via Ambient and Sound Art to the 2 'Evac' tracks going to the Artcore and Organic extremes. Each song has it's own distinct character, and with a significantly higher amount in melodic and compository details than it's predecessors, this is probably the most musically substantial CLICKS & CUTS compilation ever.

Ryoji Ikeda is one of the world's most radical sound artist famed for his detailed and precise audio-visual work at the extremities of digital engineering, as well as an occasional collaborator with Carsten Nicolai aka Alva Noto. 'Dataphonics' is Ikeda's brand new book & CD exploring the relationship between the data of sound and the sound of data. It appears via the ZigZag series of book/CDs intended to create an editorial space for sound works by artists. The CD accompanying the book contains an edited sixty minute version of the series of 'Dataphonics' broadcasts commissioned by the Atelier de Création Radiophonique (ACR) de France Culture throughout the year 2006-07 and features an hour of utterly visceral and ultra precise physical digital processing using non-audio data as elemental source material and deploying frequencies at the periphery of human audition, sounds that as Ikeda explains, "the listener becomes aware of only upon their disappearance". The book attempts to explain the processes and methods behind the creation of these sounds through mathematical and graphical examinations of the fundamental binary reduction/representation of sound waveforms. It makes for another challenging yet beautiful addition to Ikeda's hugely impressive canon - and a startling, beautifully produced artefact in its own right. Highly recommended.

Notes
The package contains a compact disc audio with 35 tracks and a compact disc data with the live visuals of tracks 01 to 20 as quicktime movie file (exp.mov, 18:05 min).

The movie was generated from realtime live visualisations of Exp.

EXP is a music-visual work based on the idea that fine art should attain the abstract purity of music. an attempt to assimilate the qualities found in music – including movement, rhythm, tempo, mood, intensity and compositional structure – within visual phenomena. the music for the project was composed of specifi c generated and selected waveforms, feedbacks, impulses, clicks, the sound of mechanics, electricity, magnetism, light and other radiation. in addition and since the animation is mainly driven by sound frequency and intensity, the sonic quality of these sounds makes it possible to obtain an optimal effect on the graphics motion. in combination with several other ways of controlling the animation – from midi programming to applying motion curves – the visualization represents an exact reproduction of the audible occurrences. as a consequence the computed images often attain anunexpected beauty, from simple geometrical patterns to extraordinarily complex forms.

Following his 2008 release in Crónica, “Filare”, Jan Ferreira presents his new work “Shattering Silence”, 14 tracks totalling over one hundred minutes of music. Once again, Mosaique releases in the Unlimited Series and is available as a free download in either 320kbps MP3 or Apple Lossless formats.

Jan Ferreira is one of the most promising Portuguese new composers of hands-on electronic music, creating his pieces from a limited palette of tools and resources, including the manipulation of feedback, analog synthesis and distortion. His pieces have deep roots in live performance, and that imbues them with a characteristic immediacy and freshness, as traces of his creative touch and direct manipulation are felt throughout the pieces.

“In this release I worked for the first time with analogue synthesis. It was new territory so I spent long time exploring timbres and textures and what especially drew my attention was the "sharpness" of sound as if one could sense its outlines like with forms and shapes. Also how sounds emerged and 'cut' through the air was of special interest to me. After recording the material it was put into composition with emphasis on the effect of layering certain sounds (and hence what depth or sense of contrast they create) and the feeling of change that occurs when the "sound scenery" shifts. The composition then was more a frame in which these things were allowed to occur (especially in the more abstract pieces) than a linear narrative. All this is also based on a general visual quality that sound conveys to me.”

[RB 083] Off Land - Anniversary EP 2010

Off Land - Anniversary EP

Released: 18 May 2010
Genre: Electronic

2 Practice 4:18
3 Ceremony, Part 1 2:02
4 Streams 1:37
5 Ascent 5:20
6 Of Height 3:34
7 Ceremony, Part 2 4:20

Similar to my previous release, Commute, which was an exercise in revisiting a past experience, the Anniversary ep is an exercise in revisiting a moment of time. Parts of my wedding were documented with field recordings. This included pre-ceremony unpacking / chatter / music, post-ceremony celebration / music, and a hike up a mountain. This material became the album’s skeleton. The guitar and French Horn were exstracted from the original field recordings.

I decided to honor the original rural conditions for playing music at my wedding and record the release with acoustic instruments only. The result is a group of dusty organic pieces that sonically represent a mountainous hike in mist and the day’s memories, as far as weather conditions will let you go. A french horn bellows and the distance on an early May day in northern New Hampshire.

[RM 439] Richard Chartier - A Field For Mixing (Album) CD 2010

Richard Chartier - A Field For Mixing
Label: Room40
Catalog#: RM439
Format: CD, Album
Country: Australia
Released: 20 Mar 2010
Genre: Electronic, Non-Music
Style: Field Recording, Minimal

Credits: Photography - Richard Chartier

Tracklist:
1 Fields For Recording 1-8 48:30
2 A Desk For Mixing 22:00

Richard Chartier’s monochromatic aesthetic has come to define an audio culture surrounding minimalism. His craftsmanship, working predominately with sounds that exist at the edges of perception is a powerful, albeit subtle statement about notions of space and sound density.

With ‘A Field For Mixing’, Chartier brings the physicality of space directly into his compositional practise. Recording a variety of small and large spaces in countries from Australia through Japan and the USA, Chartier utilises the unique properties of these spaces to create a newly defined acoustic space – one that resonates with his characteristic treatments.

Dedicated to Steve Roden, the near 50 minute piece is an wholly engaging journey. It contracts and expands with a curious sense of depth that at times is utterly absorbing – drawing the listener deeper and deeper into the acoustic layers as one aspect is added and another withdrawn.

The second piece A Desk For Mixing (dedicated to William Basinski) is equally measured. Based on his site-specific installation work “Mixing Desk’ presented at the Montalvo Art Centre in 2006, this stereo rendering expands the themes on the installation into a gentle swelling ocean of post-ambiences and high frequency statics. Elegant and immersive.

Ukranian electronic guru Yuri Lugovskoy arrives on Moteer with an enormously enjoyable collection of atmospheric, minimalist meditations, all very much evocative of the raw, experimental sound designs of early electronic music. Collecting eleven untitled compositions, this album revels in the organic pleasures of relatively simple, elegant signal processing. Using unusual loop structures, an array of warm, muted tones warbles amiably through Lugovskoy's work, at times suggesting some kind of technoid influence (as on the disco-next-door muffled funk of 'Untitled 05') while at others coming closer to old Radiophonic-style primitive soundscapes - never more impressively than on the steely oscillator morphing of 'Untitled 08'. There's also a bond with more 21st century concerns on show here: during something like 'Untitled 03' you might even find yourself reminded of Dan Abrams' Shuttle358 output, and the tone suddenly shifts towards more precise, lowercase experiments. Whichever way you turn there's sure to be something to please even the most probing pair of ears on this album. Recommended.
