Opal Taper, Stephen Bishop's intrepid Basic House project is steadily becoming one of the most fascinating off-road electronic projects around. 'Oats', for Luke Younger's highly esteemed Alter imprint, places him in good company alongside textural and rhythmic explorers such as Jamal Moss, Helm and Damien Dubrovnik. It's his 2nd album of 2013 after the crumbling deconstructions of 'Caim In Bird Form' for Digitalis, and finds his sound at once congealing and diffusing with a unique sonic syntax. Textural decay demarcates its six tracks, flowing from the buckled tape loops and guttural bass thump of 'AR II' to the soiled grunge techno of 'Child Confession' by way of a trans-temporal fag break of porno lite keys and a gasping vocal fragment before heading back into the concrète workshop ambience of 'Interiors' to close the first side. On the second, 'Est Oan' features a chamber group of swirling shapes and acephalic voices, before the grotty expanse of 'B.G. Feathers' crackins with distortion before the sinkhole of 'Dry Contact' slowly swallows its contents in a gurgling muck soup. Like any good and properly *new* music, Basic House is breaking down convention and rebuilding new forms with each subsequent release...

From his roots as renowned audio prankster and sonic agitator V/VM to his critically acclaimed work as The Caretaker and, most recently, Leyland Kirby - he's always attracted the attention of an often bewildered audience, although his stature and position as serious auteur has somehow grown exponentially with every year that has gone by since his beginnings in rainy Edgeley back in the mid 90's. The complexities of 'Two-Part Invention For Bodhran & Computer' open proceedings with dynamic manipulations of classic gaelic percussion acrobatically twisting for over 12 minutes like some extended Autechre exercise in hyperspace. Further in they work with percussionist Fernando Subirats on 'Frendano', a moodier piece working on down-stroked polyrhythms and sheer, angular electronics like one of Burnt Friedman's secret rhythms from the future. They're equally adept at the beatless stuff, too. 'Gesundheit' displays a darkly emotive feel for symphonic arrangement, as does their re-interpretation of Kettel's 'Dogan', called 'Dogness', but their malleable approach to beat processing is their best attribute, from the elasticated electrons of 'IV Port' and the bombastic Hip Hop movement of 'Mushroom Cloud Over Miami' to the intricate, frenetic syncopation of 'Livlihoods', destined to leave the most demanding beat freaks twitching in their computer chair. A very welcome return for Mark Van Hoen, the Seefeel founder member best known his ambient techno work as Locust and under his own name on Apollo and R&S in the mid-90s. The Revenant Diary, his first release on Peter Rehberg's Editions Mego, follows last year's fine City Centre Offices set Where Is The Truth, and explores similarly deep electronic sound-worlds, but it's less obviously song-based, and has different origin: while remastering some of his earliest recordings, Van Hoen was struck by the simplicity of a recording he made in 1982, a reel-to-reel experiment that, through serendipity as much as anything else, achieved a truly spooky, spellbinding result. Freshly inspired and reconnected to his young music-making self, he resolved to make his new record on 4-track using a minimal set-up. The resulting album is recognisable Van Hoen - all decaying drones, star-gazing synths, hypnotic rhythm and richly layered crackle - but there's a directness and an honesty to it that is palpable and refreshing even out of context. It's truly haunting music, with memory as its central theme - particularly powerful is the swirling 'Don't Look Back', and the epic closer 'Holy Me', a layered collage of voices reminiscent of Peter Christopherson's work in Coil and with CoH. Secret Thirteen Mix 005” is a one hour diverse musical compilation consisting of forthcoming and released works of the last twenty years that were composed by notable innovative and intellectual musicians.

The author of the mix is Richmond, VA (United States) based musician and installation artist Jonathan Lee, better known as Anduin. He also owns a record label “SMTG Limited” and participates in “Souvenir’s Young America” band as keyboardist and sound programmer. Anduin has worked with Jasper TX, James Plotkin, Svarte Greiner (Erik K. Skodvin), Stephen Vitiello and after releasing five quality based ambient, experimental and electronic style albums, he definitely carries now a considerable baggage of musical knowledge.

“Secret Thirteen Mix 005” is a volatile musical selection which explores numerous individual styles. With constantly shifting sounding and timbre an artist lets us hear a colorful palette of unique musicians such as Autechre, Lawrence English, Tom Waits or John Zorn in a different way. Capricious music is blended into graceful entirety by subtle retaining practically full-length works and mixing shortly but carefully. This selection contains everything what could be needed – from delaying guitars, world instruments, glitched sound effects and piano melodies to floating atmospheres and volatile rhythmic. Starting with the jazzy mood track Jonathan instantly turns listener to expect unexpected. Progressively increased musical tension in the first quarter is suddenly changed into waving atmospheres, resilient melodies. While ghostly rhythmic structures and abyss vocals take the whole third quarter, sweeping pad textures evolve into dramatic cinematographic ending with viscous piano drops. It is mellow and mature music where quality is a guaranty.

“Secret Thirteen Mix 005” is like surreal journey through chaotic maze of subconsciousness in the Andes’ cloud forest.

The Advisory Circle's 2008 album Other Channels is one of the best things Ghost Box have ever released, and having kept himself busy since then with various releases on his own Cafe Kaput label, Jon Brooks is now back in AC mode to drop the eagerly awaited follow-up, As The Crow Flies - and what a fiendishly good record it is. As ever with this project, the primary inspiration is the sinister undertones of public information films and wyrd 70s TV broadcasting in general, but As The Crow Flies charts less obviously sample-based territory than its predecessor; this outing is a little less about those hauntological ambiences and paternal monologues (though they're still very much attendant), more about composition and songcraft, with elaborate synthesizer arrangements and elegant folky inflections aplenty. An agreeable psychedelic whimsy characterises the record, but it's not all library music twee; you never know when there's going to be a handbrake-turn into darkness, dissoluton and abstraction: see 'Modern Through Movement', which is proto-techno by way of Berlin school kosmische, and especially 'We Cleanse This Space', a truly eerie, inspired concoction of reverbed children's choir and limpid afro-dub percussion. Hell, closing number 'Lonely Signalman' is nothing short of vocodered pop. This is perhaps As The Crow Flies' greatest achievement: that it manages to adhere to the very specific rules and requirements of the Ghost Box universe while also representing a hefty artistic leap forward for its maker. Terrific stuff.

Perfectly poised for autumnal gratification, The Boats present their first new material in a while with new album 'The Ballad Of The Eagle'. They're still a trio - Andrew Hargreaves, Craig Tattersall and Danny Norbury - and ever refining their craft to a sort of ritual somnambulant magic. For this outing they're also augmented by two special contributions, Yasuhiko Fukuzono's vocals and Joseph Borreson's Banjo, expanding their palette of electronic and acoustic instrumentation to a (very) small orchestra's worth of rich and supernaturally spatialised tones. Travelling through the album, that comforting sense of deepest blue melancholia is omnipresent, but quite often slips beyond their usual boundaries into out-and-out darkness. This mood sets the tone of opener 'Invisible Orchestras' until a swooning cello resolution and the spirit-raising machine-tooled miniature 'Dusty Rooms'. Here on in we oscillate gently between tape-hiss enigmas 'If I May Trespass On Your Patience', to quietly breathtaking, noirish drone-pop 'Omissions For You To Fill In' with sterling vocal input from Yasuhiko and Danny Norbury's Cello to the album centrepiece 'I Can't Read Your Morse Code Heartbeat', a seductively dark piece of keys and sanguine strings swaddled by electro-acoustic pulse patterns. The second half is signalled by the matter-of-fact bleakness of 'I'm Not A Pessimist, I'm Sad', and one of their most beautiful radiophonic techno pieces 'Chance Meeting At Train Stations', concluding with the warbling, edge-of-disintegration keys, drawn strings and tape hiss in 'The Days We Didn't Spend'.

'Trance-Formations I: Ancient Minimal Meditations' revolves around a conceptual cycle following the course of the day. Inevitably it starts at 'Morning Worship', brewing slow rhythmic patterns which radiate shimmering melodies, before the strolling pulses of 'Midday Attunement' meander under woozy, modulating tones seductively swirling in stereo formation. If that sounds a bit similar to lots of other synth music of the era, it's because it is, but there's an attuned grace and and deliciously squashed vibe individual to his sound here. However, matters become much more engrossing and distinguished on the other side. On 'Evening Devotional' a gurgling mass of tones beautifully bends just in-and-out of focus as melancholy keys gently ascend and descend, enveloping our ears in a molten Sequential Circuits Pro-One goop, and 'Midnight Meditation' sustains a lingering, quietly plangent resonance into the depths of the night. "Somewhere hidden in the deepest part of the Self is that special place where One can go within to the most ancient part of one's Self and connect with the origin of Self. Ancient Minimal Meditations reaches into that special place of creation of the Self and its Oneness with the Creator of All."

Already spoken about in excitable tones, 'Solitary Pursuits' is the opening gambit on a very promising new label - Public Information, "A survey of electronics... noise... psych... industrial... house... dub... wyrd-pop... library... techno... art+design from the last seven decades..." Well, they evidently know the right buttons to push and the people who push them, selecting Aaron David Ross (ADR), a Brooklyn-based multimedia artist best known as half of Fright/Merok's Gatekeeper for their first excellent release. His sound here has a lot of parallels with the Ghost Box label, a similar feel for wide-eyed yet pensive sci-fi wonderment and the sort of evocative vignettes only known to hunters of the choicest library wax. It nods to the kind of music you'd imagine Drexciya would have drawn inspiration from as a kid, and subliminally seduced an entire generation who've grown up in front of the TV/Celluloid fantasy and its sonic associations. There's some heartbreakingly lush moments in here - we urge you to investigate.

“Secret Thirteen mix #002” is a masterly improvised live recording that consists of unpublished works created between 2010-2011 by Krisztián Pető under his debuting pseudonym Eril Fjord.

The author of the live act Krisztián Pető – Eril Fjord is a conceptual electronic music artist, based in Budapest, Hungary. This artist, notorious for his membership in Magamura project, is also well known as Chris Plastic for his legendary techno, ambient music sets. By connecting abstract minimalistic rhythms, silky clicks and cinematic atmospheres he is here to express his new alter ego Eril Fjord.

“Secret Thirteen mix #002” is a dynamic and mightily penetrating live recording that proves author’s maturity in technical knowledge and his profound perception of sound itself. By using such hardware like Korg Monotrone, MS-20 Legacy, Kaoss Pad, Yamaha PSS-570, electric guitar he adds an extreme quality mark and individuality to his production. Rhythmical structures of abstract techno connected with numerous motives of styles disclose formulas of experimental sounding while vibrating nebulous spheres covered with glitch effects become an upper layer binding the whole musical installation. There is no need to embed this music into any box of genre because this live act is simply a definite proof of contemporary musical consistency.

“Secret Thirteen mix #002” is a masterpiece that presents a reform in perception of sounding trajectories. It is futuristic, unique production which leads one to explore the unknown distant objects in the universe of sound.

Debut release from a self described synthaholic from Winnipeg. Unicity utilises an impressive setup of analogue gear ranging from the epic jupiter 6 and MS-10 to spring reverbs and analog delays to create his short and bitter sweet ambient pieces. Aside from using a room full of powered up machines to keep him warm in the Canadian winter months, his analog compositions are an effort to echo his feelings and experiences in life.

A charming suite of six ambient miniatures from Unicity, making a debut appearance on the Analog Quadrant. We could reference a ton of ambient practitioners but these are just pure and simple beatless synthesizer vignettes that express something that just can't be spoken. Quite lovely.

The concept behind the record was to drop all electronic or synthesized sounds and go for only original recordings, and this is probably why it’s taken Ryan Keane and R.A. Sanchez so darned long to make the record. Thankfully it’s been worth the wait, and while it might be the final release on the much-loved Moteer label, ‘Palestine’ is a cracking way to celebrate their legacy. With a nod towards the Middle Eastern soundscapes of Muslimgauze as well as a passion for the kind of homespun electronica that came to characterize Moteer, the record is a smart blend of styles; beat driven and pitch black one minute and beautifully introverted the next. Maybe this is down to the very obvious recordings – they were right, the record is mercifully free of the electronic treatments the duo were so adamant to avoid, and the result is something that sounds more akin to latter day Third Eye Foundation or Manyfingers, or possibly even ‘Amelie’ composer Yann Tiersen. ‘Palestine’ is multi-faceted and epic, and with its long list of instrumental collaborators and startling reach through a grab-bag of styles and genres it might just be the best thing to emerge from the Moteer catalogue for some time.

Author of the mix Bartosz Dziadosz – Pleq is an electro-acoustic artist, based in Warsaw, Poland. By connecting ambient, glitch and modern classic musical elements, Pleq extracts his sincere individuality. After releasing thirteen albums and being represented in more than thirteen record labels he now can be called a major figure in the academic music scene.

“Secret Thirteen mix #001” is a coherent and thoughtful one hour musical line that definitely proves Bartosz complete musical feeling. Extensive piercing atmospheres are drifting through whole work and gently changing their shapes by assimilating even a rustle sounds. Melancholic wide range melodies submerge in the field of contemporary sound while occasionally emerging sublime cello entries and suddenly varying piano chords bring vitality into selection. These delaying field recordings and subtle effects create a perfect fulfillment to the whole.

Pleq creates a significant journey inside your mind and soul where time does not exist. This is an imperishable monument of intelligent sound from the most promising Poland’s musician.
