Secret Thirteen Mix 005 – Anduin

Secret Thirteen Mix 005 – Anduin
http://secretthirteen.org/secret-thirteen-mix-005-anduin/

Secret Thirteen Mix 005” is a one hour diverse musical compilation consisting of forthcoming and released works of the last twenty years that were composed by notable innovative and intellectual musicians.

The author of the mix is Richmond, VA (United States) based musician and installation artist Jonathan Lee, better known as Anduin. He also owns a record label “SMTG Limited” and participates in “Souvenir’s Young America” band as keyboardist and sound programmer. Anduin has worked with Jasper TX, James Plotkin, Svarte Greiner (Erik K. Skodvin), Stephen Vitiello and after releasing five quality based ambient, experimental and electronic style albums, he definitely carries now a considerable baggage of musical knowledge.

“Secret Thirteen Mix 005” is a volatile musical selection which explores numerous individual styles. With constantly shifting sounding and timbre an artist lets us hear a colorful palette of unique musicians such as Autechre, Lawrence English, Tom Waits or John Zorn in a different way. Capricious music is blended into graceful entirety by subtle retaining practically full-length works and mixing shortly but carefully. This selection contains everything what could be needed – from delaying guitars, world instruments, glitched sound effects and piano melodies to floating atmospheres and volatile rhythmic. Starting with the jazzy mood track Jonathan instantly turns listener to expect unexpected. Progressively increased musical tension in the first quarter is suddenly changed into waving atmospheres, resilient melodies. While ghostly rhythmic structures and abyss vocals take the whole third quarter, sweeping pad textures evolve into dramatic cinematographic ending with viscous piano drops. It is mellow and mature music where quality is a guaranty.

“Secret Thirteen Mix 005” is like surreal journey through chaotic maze of subconsciousness in the Andes’ cloud forest.

Anduin’s Stolen Years (LP/CD/Prints) new album is coming on March 2012.

Secret Thirteen mix #002 – Eril Fjord

Secret Thirteen mix #002 – Eril Fjord

http://soundcloud.com/chris-plastic

“Secret Thirteen mix #002” is a masterly improvised live recording that consists of unpublished works created between 2010-2011 by Krisztián Pető under his debuting pseudonym Eril Fjord.

The author of the live act Krisztián Pető – Eril Fjord is a conceptual electronic music artist, based in Budapest, Hungary. This artist, notorious for his membership in Magamura project, is also well known as Chris Plastic for his legendary techno, ambient music sets. By connecting abstract minimalistic rhythms, silky clicks and cinematic atmospheres he is here to express his new alter ego Eril Fjord.

“Secret Thirteen mix #002” is a dynamic and mightily penetrating live recording that proves author’s maturity in technical knowledge and his profound perception of sound itself. By using such hardware like Korg Monotrone, MS-20 Legacy, Kaoss Pad, Yamaha PSS-570, electric guitar he adds an extreme quality mark and individuality to his production. Rhythmical structures of abstract techno connected with numerous motives of styles disclose formulas of experimental sounding while vibrating nebulous spheres covered with glitch effects become an upper layer binding the whole musical installation. There is no need to embed this music into any box of genre because this live act is simply a definite proof of contemporary musical consistency.

“Secret Thirteen mix #002” is a masterpiece that presents a reform in perception of sounding trajectories. It is futuristic, unique production which leads one to explore the unknown distant objects in the universe of sound.

“Secret Thirteen mix #001” is a mixed compilation that consists of twelve separate compositions created between 2010-2011 by Bartosz Dziadosz, known as Pleq, and his colleagues from Japan, Canada, Spain and United Kingdom.
Author of the mix Bartosz Dziadosz – Pleq is an electro-acoustic artist, based in Warsaw, Poland. By connecting ambient, glitch and modern classic musical elements, Pleq extracts his sincere individuality. After releasing thirteen albums and being represented in more than thirteen record labels he now can be called a major figure in the academic music scene.

“Secret Thirteen mix #001” is a coherent and thoughtful one hour musical line that definitely proves Bartosz complete musical feeling. Extensive piercing atmospheres are drifting through whole work and gently changing their shapes by assimilating even a rustle sounds. Melancholic wide range melodies submerge in the field of contemporary sound while occasionally emerging sublime cello entries and suddenly varying piano chords bring vitality into selection. These delaying field recordings and subtle effects create a perfect fulfillment to the whole.

Pleq creates a significant journey inside your mind and soul where time does not exist. This is an imperishable monument of intelligent sound from the most promising Poland’s musician.

FACT mix 181: Pixel

FACT mix 181: Pixel

Pixel – real name Jon Egeskov – is a member of the esteemed Raster-Noton family, having released three albums on the label to date. He debuted in 2003 with The Display, following it with a collection of live studio recordings entitled Set Your Center Between Your Parts In Order To (2006). Pixel’s most recent offering is 2009′s The Drive, wherein he sets out to evoke an imaginary journey by car across the USA, via limber digital rhythm, the deep hiss and hum of guitar amplifiers, the churn and chatter of seemingly sentient micro-processors.
His mix for FACT includes four original Pixel tracks, with the rest of the tracklist made up largely of contributions from other Raster-Noton artists -  Alva Noto (Carsten Nicolai), Ryuichi Sakamoto, Cyclo (Nicolai & Ryoji Ikeda) and Frank Bretschneider, the latter with no less than six untitled pieces. There’s also room for ‘Twenty’ by Labradford, whose psychogeographic post-rock and ambient meanderings in the 1990s no doubt acted as a formative influence on the young Egeskov.
Pixel will be performing live at the Alpha-ville festival in London on September 17-18. He joins an international line-up of audio-visual innovators and up-and-coming talent, including Actress, Subeena, Bola, Scanner and The Boats. Find out more here.

William Fowler Collins - Surreal In Springtime

William Fowler Collins - Surreal In Springtime

The sun's shining, so who better to usher in the light faeries than William Fowler Collins?

t’s hard to believe this is only William’s first mix for Type, and I can’t give a reasonable explanation why that is. While he might be best known for his doomy, blackened soundscapes, his taste varies far more than he’s given credit for, as this wide-reaching collection of surreal gems attests. Really, there’s no better way to spend your hot spring/summer days than listening to these peculiar sounds…
Tracklist:
1. Patsy Cline // “Sweet Dreams” // Decca Country Classics (1934-1973)
2. Lydia Lunch // “The Drowning” // Drowning in Limbo
3. Lefty Frizzell // “I Never Go Around Mirrors” // Classic Country Music: A Smithsonian Collection
4. Helena Gough // “Yolk” // With What Remains
5. The Flying Burrito Brothers // “Sin City” // The Gilded Palace Of Sin
6. Maryanne Amacher // “Tower” // Sound Characters
7. Chris Watson // “Vultures, Nine Birds Feeding On Zebra Carcass, Itong Plains, Kenya” // Outside the Circle of Fire
8. Giacinto Scelsi // “Anahit” // Quattro Pezzi per Orchestra – Anahit – Uaxuctum
9. Xasthur // “In The Hate Of Battle” // Nocturnal Poisoning
10. Ennio Morricone // “The Man” // Once Upon A Time In The West

FACT mix 151: Demdike Stare

FACT mix 151 is the eerie, absorbing work of Demdike Stare – the Manchester-orbiting duo of Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty.

Whittaker is perhaps best known for his austere, dub-infused but club-friendly releases on Modern Love as MLZ and as one half of Pendle Coven; Canty is one of the tireless nugget-hunters working behind the scenes at Andy Votel’s Finders Keepers label. Like the Haxan clubnight which predates and informs it, Demdike Stare is a project combining the duo’s interests in techno, dub, drone, early electronics, astral jazz, off-kilter ethnic musics; grounded in samples, it blurs the boundary between DJ and producer, collector and creator, and has yielding astonishing results on record. The first Demdike offering was 2009’s Symbiosis album (released on CD and across two self-titled 12″s), followed by the enchanting mix CD Osmosis and most recently another LP of original material, the two-track, vinyl-only Forest of Evil.
Buoyed by the considerable cult success of their releases, Summer 2010 finds Demdike Stare have venturing out into the world for a number of live audio-visual performances, including an appearance at Shedding The Past, Dubbing The Future (Nocturne 3), a collaboration with FACT at the 2010 Mutek festival that also features King Midas Sound, Shed, Ikonika, Actress and others. Mutek takes place across various venues in Montreal over the period June 2-6, with the FACT event happening at Club Soda on Friday 4. Catch ‘em if you can.
Above and beyond their often tongue-in-cheek invocation of the occult, there is something truly uncanny about Demdike Stare’s overlapping and synthesis of textures ancient and modern, eastern and western. Witness their FACT mix, which sees ‘La Dance De Nadia’ by Lebanese composer Elias Rahbani sharing airtime with Robert Hood’s 1998 minimal banger ‘Grace Under Fire’ (Nighttime Mix) and Carl Craig’s noir-techno sure shot ‘Darkness’, and also features psychedelic reggae of Keith Hudson and German art-prog from Guru Guru as well as four previously unreleased Demdike Stare productions: ‘Rain And Shame’, ‘Matilda’s Dream’, ‘Caged In Stammheim’ and ‘The Stars Are Moving’.
Grab the mix and cop the tracklist below. See the next page for a Q&A with Demdike Stare.

Tracklist:
1. Demdike Stare – Rain And Shame
2. Demdike Stare – Matilda’s Dream

6. Unknown – Unknown Thai track
7. Elias Rahbani – La Dance De Nadia

A deep, psychedelic blend of modern electronics from ex-Yellow Swan Pete Swanson

For this third Typecast, Pete Swanson (ex of Yellow Swans) has grabbed hold of as much modern electronic music he can, to represent a subculture that seems to be bubbling and fizzing right now. Through electro, techno, idm and dubstep we’ve arrived on a sound that is just as connected to the bbc Radiophonic Workshop and Visage as it is to Carl Craig or Basic Channel. And that’s got to be a good thing.

Also of note is Pete’s inclusion of a brand new track from Jefre Cantu-Ledesma (from his forthcoming Type album – you heard it here first) and a brand new track from himself… which hasn’t even got a name yet. You can’t say we don’t drop the hott fresh dubs here, right?

Tracklist:
Jefre Cantu-Ledesma – Star Garden
Operative – Pulse
Rene Hell – X.O. Lucifer
C Section 8 – Music Box
Bulbs – Channels
Miracles Club
Mouthus – Where the Bridge Was Found
borg – Track 1 from IA!
Axolotl – track 2 from Of Bonds In General
Angel Rada – Carillion
Golden Retriever – Canonic Horizon

Xela - Live at the Brattle Theater (with Ning Nong)

Xela - Live at the Brattle Theater (with Ning Nong)

This set was recorded on 2nd May 2010 at the Brattle Theater in Cambridge, MA and documents a performance by Xela with Jim Siegel (aka Ning Nong) on percussion. Jim’s gong and cymbal drones and miscellaneous clanks were processed through John’s laptop and outboard effects and the results were piped through the PA. The set was captured by Adrian Montes (aka Noisevision) and then mastered by John Twells. This is not a soundboard recording, it’s live – warts ’n all.
