Housed in silk-screened PVC sleeve with artwork by Bill Kouligas** The prickly, Autechrian productions of Chris Douglas aka Dalglish find a sympathetic home on PAN with 'Niaiw Ot Vile'. Under myriad guises - Scald Rougish, Seaes, Rook Vallade, among others - Chris has forged a twenty year career as a self-imposed arch-outsider on the fringes of electronic music, finding recognition and respect from intrepid explorers for his persistence and uncompromising approach, all the while remaining an elusive presence. Most notably he's worked with Mad Mike and Drexciya in an unspecified capacity after moving to Detroit as a 17 year old and also appeared at Autechre's pivotal ATP festival in 2003. As with much of his catalogue, his PAN debut feels like a tribute to that influential Æ period circa LP5. It's far more obtuse, refusing the anticipatory gratification of rhythmic loops and more focussed on intricate harmonics and electro-acoustic spatial diffusion over its ten tracks. At its quietest, as with closer 'Oidhche', in the sorrow of 'Viochlm' and the haunted soundscape of 'Sclunt' his melodies remind us of Leyland Kirby.

*The long-awaited return of Warp luminaries and intricate electronic pioneers - Phoenecia.* Phoenicia, or Joshua Kay and Romulo Del Castillo (fka Soul Oddity) present their long-awaited new album with the hollowed, abstract electro-acoustic rhythm architecture of 'Demissions'. The complexities of 'Two-Part Invention For Bodhran & Computer' open proceedings with dynamic manipulations of classic gaelic percussion acrobatically twisting for over 12 minutes like some extended Autechre exercise in hyperspace. Further in they work with percussionist Fernando Subirats on 'Frendano', a moodier piece working on down-stroked polyrhythms and sheer, angular electronics like one of Burnt Friedman's secret rhythms from the future. They're equally adept at the beatless stuff, too. 'Gesundheit' displays a darkly emotive feel for symphonic arrangement, as does their re-interpretation of Kettel's 'Dogan', called 'Dogness', but their malleable approach to beat processing is their best attribute, from the elasticated electrons of 'IV Port' and the bombastic Hip Hop movement of 'Mushroom Cloud Over Miami' to the intricate, frenetic syncopation of 'Livlihoods', destined to leave the most demanding beat freaks twitching in their computer chair. Good to have them back.

Arriving like some blockbuster sequel to 'Returnal', Oneohtrix Point Never's eagerly anticipated 'Replica' sucks us deep into a simulated 4.1 world fantasia. Most strikingly, his sonic palette is far broader than before, adding piano keys, Techno beats and somersaulting glitch edits with a fancier, hi-tech studio-honed sound design, articulating a more kinetic, progressive vision of timeless electronica. There's a palpable sense that he's excitedly exploring every option afforded him by the Mexican Summer studios, immersing himself and us in a vivid off-planet adventure every bit as sincerely lush and awe-inspiring as previous solo outings, but moving out of the shadows of his over-referenced influences and into the light of a stranger, alien sun. There are still obvious reminders of David Byrne & Brian Eno's 'My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts' or Eno and Jon Hassell's 'Possible Musics' and moments of Sakamoto-esque sublime, but there's also traces of Nicholas Collins' stutter-circuits and the digital dreams of mid-eighties Chris Carter. To be honest, we've not had a chance to spend much time with 'Replica' (sort it out promo people!), but we can guarantee it's going to be getting much closer inspection. From initial impressions it's hugely promising!

After the Pruitt Igoe E.P, Kangding Ray returns with his third album for raster-noton, pushing further his explorations on the edge of digital and analog sounds. With OR, Kangding Ray continues to blur the borders between experimental and bass music, and brings his signature sound to another level, somewhere at the darkest fringe of club culture.

With the massive metallic beats of « athem », the frightening distorded waves of « Mojave », the elevated groove of « Odd Sympathy », the modulated guitar walls of « Leavaila Scheme », or the low-bitrate Everest of « La Belle », KR creates deep atmospheres, loaded with echoes of collapsing economies, dysfunctional political systems, and corporate alienation.

In an abstract manner, OR depicts the desillusions of modern civilizations, while initiating a positive reflection on crisis as a creative state.

OR (« gold » in french), as the only chemical element that seems to keep its value for eternity, refers to the cult of endless consumption and the absurdity of fluctuating currency valuations, while in english, as a logical operator or grammatical conjunction, OR represents the possibility of another choice, an « inclusive disjunction » which suggests that there might be another answer, a different path to follow.

Noticeable inputs have been provided by Ben Frost, who composed a keyboard line for « Or », Rose Tizane Merrill who lend her voice to the anarchist poem « Monsters », and Magne Mostue who wrote the words and sang on « Coracoid Process » as well as the vocal version of the prophetic electronic mantra « Pruitt Igoe ».
