A very welcome return for Mark Van Hoen, the Seefeel founder member best known his ambient techno work as Locust and under his own name on Apollo and R&S in the mid-90s. The Revenant Diary, his first release on Peter Rehberg's Editions Mego, follows last year's fine City Centre Offices set Where Is The Truth, and explores similarly deep electronic sound-worlds, but it's less obviously song-based, and has different origin: while remastering some of his earliest recordings, Van Hoen was struck by the simplicity of a recording he made in 1982, a reel-to-reel experiment that, through serendipity as much as anything else, achieved a truly spooky, spellbinding result. Freshly inspired and reconnected to his young music-making self, he resolved to make his new record on 4-track using a minimal set-up. The resulting album is recognisable Van Hoen - all decaying drones, star-gazing synths, hypnotic rhythm and richly layered crackle - but there's a directness and an honesty to it that is palpable and refreshing even out of context. It's truly haunting music, with memory as its central theme - particularly powerful is the swirling 'Don't Look Back', and the epic closer 'Holy Me', a layered collage of voices reminiscent of Peter Christopherson's work in Coil and with CoH. Okay so this is weird - in February 2011 Gier Jenssen finished an album dedicated to the Japanese post-war reconstruction and, specifically, the country's futuristic nuclear program. After surveying numerous photos he became fascinated by the idea that nuclear power plants could be built so close to the sea in earthquake-prone areas, and this slowly became the focus for his recordings. A few months later and, alas, the album has gained considerable poignancy - we are now in the aftermath of one of Japan's most serious disasters and Jenssen's concepts have a strangely prophetic quality to them. The music itself is hardly melancholy, but has a damaged, cold, digital edge which mirrors the clean architectural perfection of the ominous structures, pre-earthquake of course. As Jenssen's clipped, purposeful rhythms slowly make their way into synthetic patterns, they guide the record and imbue proceedings with a fitting Kubrickian haze. 'N-Plants' almost reminds of early SND (think 'Stdio' or 'Makesndcassette') but played at the wrong speed. These are slow, booming passages of sound carried out with a masterful ear, displaying the razor sharp precision of a true veteran of the field. Lazy, lackadaisical witch-house this is not, but 'N-Plants' shares threads with its purposeful slow-down of dance music tropes. It's a powerful record: without the context 'N-Plants' is an affecting, engrossing listening experience, but with the added air of melancholy, it becomes all the more haunting and memorable. Highly Recommended.

On Unleft, Keith Kenniff collects previously unreleased Helios material recorded between 2000 and 2009, sequencing the resultant tracks as a self-contained album. The resultant fifty minutes plays out as a wonderfully varied sequence that focusses on melodically resonant electronic music. You'll hear some of the compositional techniques Kenniff has become known for at work, cutting a tuneful, glitched-up swathe through opener 'Convivium', while the crunchily filtered, slow-core beats of 'Friedel' and 'Distance' channel a hazy, opiated quality. Taking this a little further, the creaking deep bass and beautiful electronic post-rock of 'Cross The Ocean' is touched by the influence of Boards Of Canada, something that could also be said of the downtempo, beat-heavy ambience of 'Bounce Dive', though there's a more playful and openly tuneful quality to Kenniff's music compared to that of the Brothers Eoin, something highlighted by the airier, brighter productions of the Portlander's music. There's also a pronounced cinematic quality to all this, and you can well imagine Kenniff being recruited to score a film at some point down the line, especially given beautifully crafted, acoustic guitar-driven pieces like 'South Tree' or the upbeat, piano-heavy 'The Morning Room', both of which showcase this side of his output very strongly.

This latest edition from the Home Assembly camp is a double-disc affair, packaging the new album by The Green Kingdom (aka Michigan's Michael Cottone) with a bonus remix CD, featuring contributions from the likes of The Boats, The Declining Winter, Part-Timer, Northerner, Inch-Time and Bvdub. Mastered by Taylor Deupree, Prismatic invites plenty more comparisons with the 12k label's discerning microsound agenda, presenting whirled electroacoustics and quiet, melodious drones across forty-five wonderful minutes. It's easy to get bored of this sort of sound nowadays - the sheer volume of material like this coming our way at the moment is just staggering - but while it's playing, Prismatic feels like the only micro-ambient record you need ever hear. It's an unwaveringly lovely piece of work, produced to the highest standards, and it really doesn't matter that you've probably heard these sorts of crackly, tuneful laptop tones and processed bell chimes several times before, The Green Kingdom manages to make this stuff sound like fertile territory, at least for a little while. 'Claude's Ghost', 'Wetlands' and 'Bonfire [Tec]' are all especially good, each getting that all-important balance between harmony and texture just right. The hour-long, ten-track remix collection serves as a great bonus too, with particular highlights coming from the Burial-esque Northerner take on 'The Largest Creature That Has Ever Lived' and 'The Declining Winter's violin-laced take on 'Woven'.
