The KVB unveil their gloaming industro-goth alias, Burma Camp on Avian's Mira sublabel. Three tracks home in and expand on the more coruscating, abrasive side of The KVB's sound, isolating and tempering its most esoteric side. The noxious cloud of tortured vocals and jagged pulses in 'Repulsion' falls somewhere between the desolate black metal of Wold and Silent Servant's most blown-out post-punk techno, full of evil, pregnant suspense and 'marish intent. 'Isa' reminds more of Zhark Record's bleakest, thundering techno, but alloyed with stentorian, dystopian dungeon vocals, and 'Attraction' provides a fine counterpoint with opiated goth atmospheres recalling Tropic Of Cancer, but depressed to a dull, stygian thud.

Opal Taper, Stephen Bishop's intrepid Basic House project is steadily becoming one of the most fascinating off-road electronic projects around. 'Oats', for Luke Younger's highly esteemed Alter imprint, places him in good company alongside textural and rhythmic explorers such as Jamal Moss, Helm and Damien Dubrovnik. It's his 2nd album of 2013 after the crumbling deconstructions of 'Caim In Bird Form' for Digitalis, and finds his sound at once congealing and diffusing with a unique sonic syntax. Textural decay demarcates its six tracks, flowing from the buckled tape loops and guttural bass thump of 'AR II' to the soiled grunge techno of 'Child Confession' by way of a trans-temporal fag break of porno lite keys and a gasping vocal fragment before heading back into the concrète workshop ambience of 'Interiors' to close the first side. On the second, 'Est Oan' features a chamber group of swirling shapes and acephalic voices, before the grotty expanse of 'B.G. Feathers' crackins with distortion before the sinkhole of 'Dry Contact' slowly swallows its contents in a gurgling muck soup. Like any good and properly *new* music, Basic House is breaking down convention and rebuilding new forms with each subsequent release...

Richard A.Ingram returns with an engrossing, desolate and cinematic suite of recordings that expand his vision of mildewed and mottled doom ambience after last years excellent debut album 'Consolamentum'. Like its predecessor, the machinations of Ingram's underworld are left to the imagination; there's no clear origin to his sounds, everything is obfuscated in a murk, creating that palpable feeling of fear one might find when waking up in the middle of the night, before your eyes adjust to the darkness. The first instance of 'Agile Drone' slowly rises through murky tape noise to pass through unseen acousmatics and filtered piano until a booming bass shocks us into a sort of paralysis, the fear intensified by immobility while uncontrollable apparitions swirl at the peripheries. Next 'Truncheon Tree' slightly dissipates the unease with an ethereal passage of almost Rhythm & Sound-like dub delays and piano peering out of misty atmospheres, the expert mastering from Taylor Deupree evidently enhancing the parameters of this illusory space. The final tracks, entitled 'Chaos Fortifier' and 'Retro Morph', venture into realms of aural perversity akin to the compelling yet disturbing visuals of Gaspar Noe ('Enter The Void' and 'Irreversible'), also recalling the soundtrack by Jean-Claude Eloy or BJ Nilsen & Stillupsteypa with chilling precision. There's so much of this sort of doomed ambience around these days - but Ingram really does slot into the top tier. Recommended.

Already spoken about in excitable tones, 'Solitary Pursuits' is the opening gambit on a very promising new label - Public Information, "A survey of electronics... noise... psych... industrial... house... dub... wyrd-pop... library... techno... art+design from the last seven decades..." Well, they evidently know the right buttons to push and the people who push them, selecting Aaron David Ross (ADR), a Brooklyn-based multimedia artist best known as half of Fright/Merok's Gatekeeper for their first excellent release. His sound here has a lot of parallels with the Ghost Box label, a similar feel for wide-eyed yet pensive sci-fi wonderment and the sort of evocative vignettes only known to hunters of the choicest library wax. It nods to the kind of music you'd imagine Drexciya would have drawn inspiration from as a kid, and subliminally seduced an entire generation who've grown up in front of the TV/Celluloid fantasy and its sonic associations. There's some heartbreakingly lush moments in here - we urge you to investigate.

*Limited vinyl pressing of this excellent album where the retro-futurism of Leyland Kirby's "Intrigue & Stuff" series meets classic John Carpenter and the kind of squashed arpeggiated electronics Emeralds are so loved for. Initial copies come on gorgeous transparent green vinyl* The electronic obsessions of the U.S. underground follow the current somewhere darker and literally tranced-out on the first full length album of synth music by Brazilian ex-pat Ricardo Donoso. A background in jazz drumming and as member of avant-metal outfit Ehnare give little indication of what Ricardo has been up to in his own time, which probably couldn't be any further from those disparate styles. 'Progress Chance' is based on the "morning dance music" of raves which Ricardo visited as a youth, namely the Goan and Scandinavian strains of heavily gated and arpeggiated dance music, but he's removed the unwieldy rhythms to leave lushly pulsating patterns and the all-important chord changes which carried all the emotive weight, resulting in something quite unexpected and brilliant. Using only the choicest parts of what for most is simply a "cheesy" genre, Donoso manages to reminded us of Leyland Kirby's opaque approach with the 'Intrigue & Stuff' series or the psychedelic lather of loops in Diamond Catalog's 'Magnified Palette'. boomkat

[MIA CD 016] Kreng – Grimoire CD (Album) 2011

Kreng – Grimoire
Label: Miasmah
Catalog#: MIACD016
Format: CD, Album
Country: Norway
Released: 03 Jun 2011
Genre: Electronic
Style: Modern Classical, Dark Ambient, Drone

Design – Erik K. Skodvin*
Mastered By – Nils Frahm
Photography By – Stef Lernous
Written By, Producer – Pepijn Caudron

Tracklist:
1 Karcist 2:43
2 Le Bateleur 7:29
3 Opkropper 3:11
4 Petit Grimoire 4:21
Piano – Nils Frahm
5 Wrak 9:04
6 Ballet Van De Bloedhoeren 4:36
7 Girl In A Fishtank 3:38
8 La Poule Noire 3:49
9 Balkop 4:57
10 Satyriasis 7:18
Percussion – Eric Thielemans
11 Konker 2:45

Having first entered our lives in 2009 with an album so singularly terrifying that it still gives us nightmares, Pepijn Caudron - the elusive mastermind behind Kreng - plunges even deeper into the heart of darkness with a new full-length offering for Miasmah. The results are just phenomenal, combining a palpably European antique grandeur with cutting edge sound design and a pervasive occult charge (a 'grimoire' is a book of spells, don'tcha know). 'Karcist' is the curtain-raiser, wherein ambiguous midnight ambience soon gives way to hands-around-the-throat dread; 'Le Bateleur' is a zombie waltz of baleful clarinet, muted horns and snares flapping like bat's wings. On 'Opkropper', Kreng's neo-classical ambitions swell to the fore, plangent cello lavishly swelling amid Ligeti-style piano jabs and snatches of soprano opera singing that sound like Edith Piaf trapped down a well. 'Petit Grimoire' is the album's seductive highlight, impish strings hanging off a muffled techno pulse, and 'Wrak' is a veritable symphony of things that go bump in the night: shrill violins and discordant woodwind scrapping and scraping over a steadily iterated, Morricone-esque motif. The stately orchestral vibe returns for 'Ballet Van De Bloedhoeren' only to dissolve into a fetid swamp of the sickest drone; 'Girl In A Fishtank' sounds like one of Leyland Kirby and Philip Jeck's clammiest nightmares, a real Death In Venice dirge, its 1920s pomp racked by the threat of cholera, drowning, forbidden lust and war. 'La Poule Noire is a grimm tale with an almost industrial momentum, its reverbed percussion rolling horribly, unstoppably onwards like a steam train to the death factory. Has gothic minimalism ever sounded this vivid, this all-consuming and three-dimensional? Not to our knowledge.

Kanshin is a two CD compilation album that presents a collection of sound design work from some of the scene's finest artists from across the globe. It has been put together to raise money for the current recovery in Japan following March's earthquake.

As the sensationalist media broadcasters find other things to talk about in the news, a huge recovery operation is still on-going as we speak. Many people have lost everything. So we decided to put together Kanshin so that via Ian Hawgood, 100% of profit from compilation sales will go directly towards the Japan recovery and on-going relief efforts. Ian lives in Japan and his wife is currently working with both the Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support organisation (JEARS)
in Sendai and surrounding areas, as well as the Direct Help for Victims and Animals Rejected from Shelters in Japan group who are going up to areas which are not receiving government support for food, water, basic
supplies, as well as rebuilding and cleaning up. By this means they are able to transport food, clothing and aid directly almost every other weekend and during holidays to areas which are not getting enough or any support.
Ian's wife has also arranged a house as a base in Sendai for volunteers and a temporary home for found animals who are then moved on through JEARS either to foster homes or animal centres. We felt that any funds we can send this way would probably have more of an immediate impact than donating via one of the larger UK charities.

Ian himself has contributed to the compilation in a collaboration with Peter Jørgensen and through 3 hours and some 30 tracks, the line up that comprises this album is surely as exciting as it gets...

Kanshin is curated by Daniel Crossley (Fluid Radio/Fluid
Audio/Facture) and Jonathan Lees (Hibernate/Rural Colours), with invaluable assistance from Ian Hazeldine (Cover art), Wil Bolton (Mastering) and Damian Valles (Digital distribution). This release is made possible by the generosity of all of the artists involved.

*Immense, dark and unbelievably heavy analogue productions somewhere between Eleh, Pan Sonic and Eliane Radigue on this limited edition vinyl pressing. It doesn't really matter when this music was made or by whom, all you need to know is that only 400 copies have been made for the world, housed in a suitably anonymous white-on-white embossed sleeve* Suum Cuique (pronouned Soom Kwi-Kwe, Latin for "To Each His Own") follows the remit of Young Americans to explore uncharted, experimental, and personal synthscapes, guided by the hand of intuition with an entirely analogue array of machines. There's a confidence and ability to these productions which elevates them above the masses of lo-fi synth meanderings currently murmuring in the underground, occupying the tantalising space between Eliane Radigue and James Ferraro, or Thomas Köner and Daphne Oram, creating a dialogue between their shared and opposing aesthetics to give an emotional response with deeply chilling and engrossing results. In 'Lithic Reduction' concrète textures grind like a millstone to release powdery clouds of analog dust, settling only to be dispersed by gusts of blackened distortion, whereas 'Red Binary' is distinctly electronic, revolving around muted radar bleeps like the resonance from SAW II soundtracking a speckly pill experience that's starting to go west. The album's centrepiece, the aptly titled 'Entropy' nods to the sublimely stoic work of Eleh, radiating microtonal bass shifts while a bitter northerly wind builds in intensity. Brilliantly out of place, 'Cyclic Redundancy' opens the flipside with a majestically submerged slab of completely obliterated and submerged 4/4, like an unholy collusion between Mika Vainio, Sandwell and Bernard Parmegiani soundtracking a trade union rave in the 1950's, before 'Even In Death...' conjures imagery of a eulogy given by a Mongolian throat singer with crows circling overhead. Strictly limited copies, catch it while you can.

*First CD release on the incredible PAN label, limited to 1000 copies, housed in pro-press digisleeve jacket and containing another dose of flawlessly curated, picked and realised music from the extremes of the electronic spectrum - do not miss* Pan Records' first CD release is also the first collaborative output by respected electroacoustic sound artists Thomas Ankersmit and Valerio Tricoli. Their five tracks on 'Forma II' were composed and recorded in Berlin from 2008 to 2010, and include four shorter electroacoustic pieces based on experiments with a Serge Modular Analogue synthesizer and one long-form tract of overdubbed saxophone exploring the timbral extremes of Ankersmit's instrument. The four hyper-sensitively detailed electroacoustic pieces range from 6 to 13 minutes in length and move between ultra-vivid blizzards of textural detail to plangent drone and vast atmospheric diffusions. Through deft computer and tape processing coupled with almost tangibly "real" sound sources such as metal foil floating on ultrasonic soundbeams or the man made resonance of the radar domes at Teufelsberg outside Berlin, the pair create a kinetic space which challenges our perception of simulated, or virtual shapes and spatial settings, and non-virtual, acoustic tangibility. In particular, the thirteen minute 'Plague #7' is an immersive passage of deep, thrumming bass tones and glassy hi-frequencies with the potently surreal effect, while the longer finale, 'Takht-e Tâvus' builds a swarm-like cluster of sumptuously discordant saxophone tones amassing a slow, gripping intensity and uncannily natural detailing. The CD is really brought to life by Rashad Becker's mastering at Clunk, and comes housed in one-tone silk screened pvc sleeve with interweaving geomteric designs, with artwork by Kathryn Politis and Bill Kouligas. Another exceptional transmission from PAN, a label that's fast attained buy-on-sight status.

*Emeralds' John Elliot and Radio People's Sam Goldberg on a killer, dense and tripped out synth adventure - already sold out at source* Sam Goldberg (Radio People) and John Elliott (Emeralds/Imaginary Softwoods) embark on their latest vision quest as Mist with a dazzling album of untethered interzonal synth exploration. 'Glowing Net' previously appeared as a cassette on Goldberg's Pizza Night label but it's clearly one of those sessions that just had to end up on wax, ready to soundtrack the light show behind your eyelids. 'Glowing Net' takes the sounds of their previous 'Mist' LP one step further, affording a 360º panoramic view of totally classic sci-fi soundscapes. From the outset of 'A.M.' there's a sure adjustment of reverb settings, expanding their sound to the peripheries of perception and allowing glimpses of previously unseen/heard galactic disturbances deep in the distance. The effect carries into 'Sky High' where a deceptively mixed distant clang more than once made us think some workmen were repairing a shuttle outside the office, itself creating a magically transcendent space enhanced by the flurry of chromatic synth shapes. From the dominant, titanic emotions of 'Mist Stream' onwards, the other side encounters the vast shapes of 'Soaring Yellow/Glowing Net' and the breathtaking, near-symphonic scenery of 'Mist Refrain', both as close as you'll get to a contemporary equivalent of classic '70s/'80s sci-fi soundtracks. The effect of all this is surely enhanced by the remastering for vinyl by James Plotkin and a vinyl lacquer cut at Berlin's alchemical D&M. Highly recommended indeed.

*For all intents and purposes, this is the great 'lost' Deathprod album* 'Your Naked Ghost Comes Back At Night' seemed to go fairly unnoticed by the great listening public when it was initially released on a small cd-only pressing by the French DSA label back in 2004, but has since become the stuff of legend. To many this has become one of the great 'lost' death ambient albums, and an all too-rare full-length excursion from one of the most revered producers of the century - Helge Sten, aka Deathprod. As a producer, Sten molds the source material into the kind of menacing analog atmosphere established on his classic 'Morals & Dogma' long-player, leaving you with one of the finest examples of the genre this side of Deathprod's own peerless four-disc boxset. The real beauty of this record lies in the richness of its sound matter: you'll never encounter a drab low-frequency hum on this record. When you gaze beneath the surface you're always sure to make out something buried deeply within its dusky obscurities. Even during its most oppressive moments, such as the writhing, concealed darkness of 'Facade' there's a loaded atmosphere that plays on the mind - its vast sonorous clanking somehow reminiscent of Quatermass II's unseen monstrous mass, thrashing around in the industrial plant's cooling towers. Equally, much of 'Your Naked Ghost...' sounds like being stuck at the bottom of the ocean in a submarine only to hear someone knocking from the outside. It creepily plays on the subconscious in ways most records couldn't possibly hope to, resounding with a hollow metallic quality that conveys the utmost sense of sonic profundity - leaving you with a vacuum you can't help but fill with all manner of gloomy associations. Despite the sinister undercurrents, this is an unmistakably beautiful hour of music. From the penetrating blip narratives of 'In The Forest Of The Night' to the entombed industrial timbres of 'The Lonesome Poetry Of Mark Rothko', every moment of this once desperately overlooked album is incredibly special. In short, it's an absolute must.

[WIT 009] Saturn Form Essence - Abyss (EP) CD 2009

Saturn Form Essence - Abyss
Label: Witte Dood Records
Catalog#: WIT009
Format: CDr, Mini, Limited Edition, EP
Country: Netherlands
Released: 2009
Genre: Electronic
Style: Dark Ambient, Drone

Limited to 33 copies.

Tracklist:
1 Abyss 11:06

Sometimes the name says it all; the solo-project Saturn Form Essence from Ukraine paints images of space through electronic and ambient sounds. Even though the band is really young, it's managed to create three full-lenghts, three demos and two EP's - and all of them were released this year!

The track is based on a really slow, calm, spacey, and somewhat low-pitch ambient pattern that progresses in a vein that makes me think that it was made (and possibly improvised) with a synthetisator; the chords changes also imply to that direction, they are that visible. The synth-track is backed by a bassy "two-chord" droning pattern that's repeated throughout the track. The drone pattern doesn't change, it just occasionally changes it's pitch or volume a bit. These two sounds fit well together and create a working whole, except for the brief moments when the drone gets too much space to itself as it just doesn't sound too good on it's own.

Even though this track is rather good execution- and sound-wise, it's ideas and structure present really basic material; if you're into space ambient, it's most likely that you've heard similar stuff way too many times. The track lacks in ideas and daring, and even though the used sounds are good, especially the synth-sound is rather basic too. As the release is based on such a sparse amount of elements and changes, it gives it's all in a rather short amount of time.

Despite all that, the release does succeed in painting images of deep space and is good for an occasional listen. Based on all the material I've heard from the band, there would be need for a good deal of practicing the usage the chosen instruments, as well as refining the ideas.

two short-form tracks (the latter of which overlaps with “does it look like i'm here?” - the former appears to be exclusive here - perhaps an alternate to the album’s “double helix” ? - listen to the sound-sample) par excellence, continuing the band’s work in short-form variants on their extended synth/guitar bliss-out also with the singles its going to rule because its like a bunch of the tracks from the record, but also many out-takes, b-sides and live etc... next batch will have like three out- takes ! one includes an excerpt from our performance with tg in chicago .. pretty cool stuff

Following his 2008 release in Crónica, “Filare”, Jan Ferreira presents his new work “Shattering Silence”, 14 tracks totalling over one hundred minutes of music. Once again, Mosaique releases in the Unlimited Series and is available as a free download in either 320kbps MP3 or Apple Lossless formats.

Jan Ferreira is one of the most promising Portuguese new composers of hands-on electronic music, creating his pieces from a limited palette of tools and resources, including the manipulation of feedback, analog synthesis and distortion. His pieces have deep roots in live performance, and that imbues them with a characteristic immediacy and freshness, as traces of his creative touch and direct manipulation are felt throughout the pieces.

“In this release I worked for the first time with analogue synthesis. It was new territory so I spent long time exploring timbres and textures and what especially drew my attention was the "sharpness" of sound as if one could sense its outlines like with forms and shapes. Also how sounds emerged and 'cut' through the air was of special interest to me. After recording the material it was put into composition with emphasis on the effect of layering certain sounds (and hence what depth or sense of contrast they create) and the feeling of change that occurs when the "sound scenery" shifts. The composition then was more a frame in which these things were allowed to occur (especially in the more abstract pieces) than a linear narrative. All this is also based on a general visual quality that sound conveys to me.”

FACT mix 151: Demdike Stare

FACT mix 151 is the eerie, absorbing work of Demdike Stare – the Manchester-orbiting duo of Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty.

Whittaker is perhaps best known for his austere, dub-infused but club-friendly releases on Modern Love as MLZ and as one half of Pendle Coven; Canty is one of the tireless nugget-hunters working behind the scenes at Andy Votel’s Finders Keepers label. Like the Haxan clubnight which predates and informs it, Demdike Stare is a project combining the duo’s interests in techno, dub, drone, early electronics, astral jazz, off-kilter ethnic musics; grounded in samples, it blurs the boundary between DJ and producer, collector and creator, and has yielding astonishing results on record. The first Demdike offering was 2009’s Symbiosis album (released on CD and across two self-titled 12″s), followed by the enchanting mix CD Osmosis and most recently another LP of original material, the two-track, vinyl-only Forest of Evil.
Buoyed by the considerable cult success of their releases, Summer 2010 finds Demdike Stare have venturing out into the world for a number of live audio-visual performances, including an appearance at Shedding The Past, Dubbing The Future (Nocturne 3), a collaboration with FACT at the 2010 Mutek festival that also features King Midas Sound, Shed, Ikonika, Actress and others. Mutek takes place across various venues in Montreal over the period June 2-6, with the FACT event happening at Club Soda on Friday 4. Catch ‘em if you can.
Above and beyond their often tongue-in-cheek invocation of the occult, there is something truly uncanny about Demdike Stare’s overlapping and synthesis of textures ancient and modern, eastern and western. Witness their FACT mix, which sees ‘La Dance De Nadia’ by Lebanese composer Elias Rahbani sharing airtime with Robert Hood’s 1998 minimal banger ‘Grace Under Fire’ (Nighttime Mix) and Carl Craig’s noir-techno sure shot ‘Darkness’, and also features psychedelic reggae of Keith Hudson and German art-prog from Guru Guru as well as four previously unreleased Demdike Stare productions: ‘Rain And Shame’, ‘Matilda’s Dream’, ‘Caged In Stammheim’ and ‘The Stars Are Moving’.
Grab the mix and cop the tracklist below. See the next page for a Q&A with Demdike Stare.

Black Square Netlabel

Black square on white field, carrying abstraction to its ultimate geometric simplification.

Called a "dead square" and a "void" by the critics, as well as "the greatest by far among the fairground tricks of instant culture." To Malevich, however, this square symbolized a "full void", in that it showed how painting could fulfill itself unaided by any reference to a specific external reality. For him the square represented only Suprematism: "the supremacy of pure feeling" in and of itself. Malevich removes specific subject matter by shifting away from representation and mimesis and towards the purity of mathematical geometry."The square = feeling, the white field = the void beyond this feeling."

Black Square netlabel is about synthesis between image and a sound, music and a photo. And as Malevich's square it does not recognize genre distinctions as in music so in photography, but represents only Suprematism: "the supremacy of pure feeling".
