Ras returns from planet X with a six track EP of abstract dub-hop head pressure. With 'El Alyien Part 1' it soon becomes obvious that we've caught Ras at his most esoteric. The first four tracks are a bong-eyed blend of rich field recordings and crackly samples knitted togther with a bed of psychoactively charged subbass. There's almost no telling where each track starts and stops if you weren't looking at the screen, lending an intuitive and expressionist collage feel to the set. GB's remix brings up the rear with a spherical rerub of the second track, sounding a little like the Delia Derbyshire just smoked a blunt with Dilla. Recommended!

"I first came across Marihiko Hara’s work in 2007, with his ‘Cesura’ release on the excellent Italian net-label – Zymogen. It really drew me in more than most other work that was doing the rounds at the same time. It had the sort of organic details and attention to beautiful subtle developments that I had only really heard in offthesky and Nicolas Bernier before (both label mates on Zymogen I should add). It became my soundtrack to that year and an album I returned to almost daily during the winter months. After this I followed Marihiko’s work carefully, from his rather fantastic 2009 ‘Icon’ release on Cotton Goods to his recent ‘Prosa’ collaboration with Tomas Phillips on Tench Records.
I’m not entirely sure when we first got in touch or who instigated it, but its been a few years now and seeing Marihiko’s evolution and careful development has been a joy to behold. He then completely flummoxed me when askingif I would consider releasing a heavily beat-led record. My only prerequisite was that the beats were made organically, not just some obvious drum machine or sample. Marihiko’s request came at a time when both Ben and myself really wanted Home Normal to push on from its comfortable surroundings that so many labels, artists and possibly listeners for that matter, wish to reside – and keep things evolving, changing and as such more meaningful for us. After averaging 10 or so drone demos a day at the time, the initial mixes for Credo were sent. I was in England in this period with Ben, tieing up the latest Home Normal work. I recall that we were actually driving to pick up packing materials and decided to make it a demo listening time and that we would do ‘blind’ listens. At some point in the journey, Credo was put on and the car journey ended up being far longer as we wanted to do repeat listens. Amongst excited expressions over just how much we loved the record, was a mutual agreement that this was exactly the kind of music we wanted to put out, and exactly the kind of music which needed to be heard by one of the most talented young producers around today."

*LIMITED TO 100 INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED AND HAND-PACKAGED COPIES FOR THE WORLD* The latest Cotton Goods release arrives in typically mysterious and anonymous looking fashion, revealing only a catalogue number and the words "Scissors And Sellotape", which sounds suitably like a summary of how the release was put together - both in terms of its packaging and the music itself, which is typically delicate and homespun; a bit like a school arts and crafts project. Actually, Scissors And Sellotape is the artist name, and it's the latest alias of John McCaffrey, aka Part Timer, whose work has previously appeared on Moteer, Mobeer, Flau and various self-releases. Here the beautiful music draws on sounds from gamelan-style metallophone percussion, location recordings, tape noise and haunting instrumental fragments, all cut into shape and stuck back together in new song-shaped forms. Divided into eight 'Chapters' over twenty minutes, these collages are cradled in hiss and glitch-like pops and crackles where the cuts are made. The unbuffed edges only enhance the earthy texture, and this approach reaches the height of its powers and effectiveness by 'Chapter 4', whose downtrodden piano and clicking, pattering beats make for a sublime combination, very much in the vein of the Remote Viewer's most enduring works. The emphasis on drum patterns and melodic progression becomes all the stronger during the wonderful 'Chapter 6' and 'Chapter 7', but the slightly more abstract, textural tracks that surround them really underline the sense of sonic dislocation and archive-trawling from which these compositions originated. Lovely and enigmatic as ever, this latest bespoke Cotton Goods release comes in the usual print run of 100 copies, so no snoozing...

The 4th album by french producer KABUTOGANI is his most conceptual to date. Made entirely of mostly rhythmic glitch sounds (aka Clicks & Cuts), the album still has traces of melodies or tones - unlike many other minimal glitch productions. The cold, dry and noisy sound transports an almost morbid atmosphere. Experimental electronic music seldomly was so full of feelings - rather inconvenient ones, but feelings. This is what makes this album special.

Volume 5.0 (subtitled "Paradigm Shift") features a totally new generation of young artists giving a 360 degree view on fresh glitch sounds: from Minimal Clicks to IDM-/Dub-ish tracks via Ambient and Sound Art to the 2 'Evac' tracks going to the Artcore and Organic extremes. Each song has it's own distinct character, and with a significantly higher amount in melodic and compository details than it's predecessors, this is probably the most musically substantial CLICKS & CUTS compilation ever.

Sum is the debut album of Werken, one of the aliases of Tilman Ehrhorn known for his releases on Mille Plateaux and Resopal Schallware.
Working full time as saxophone and reed player, composer, producer and sound designer Tilman Ehrhorn is a highly regarded jazz artist who also took roots in the electronic world.
Among teaching, giving jazz clinics and regular work in theater, tv-, radio-, and cd- productions he has established himself as a composer as well as a performing artist in clubs, at festivals and for concert tours all over the world.

This release introduces an experimental and ambientish dubby side of his producing skills. Almost every sound has been generated on a modular synthesizer. Some important developing tools within the synth are sine- and noiseoscillators, with which also most of the percussion sounds are built.
The majority of tunes are crossfading to the following; the progress of the album ranges from the opening track to its closing reprise like of one piece.
In many parts of the tracks, beats are used rhythmically free to interrupt a pulsing soundpad, which is a main element of the music. Some minimal changing figures are taking hold to break up continous sequential patterns.
The non-conventional manner of generating sounds as well as using elements of chance within the production process creates similarities with the improvisational niveau of jazz and contemporary composed music.

Michael Santos is a London-based artist who has previously released on U-Cover, Benbecula and the excellent French label, Baskaru. I received the album just as I was about to go out into the Tokyo night for a bit of a photography session, and by this point was on my sixth demo of the day. I wasn’t in any great mood to listen to anything much by this point, I thought I’d give it a few days before paying attention to it. Well, turns out that just before I went out that night, I whacked it onto my ipod anyway, later realising that I had actually deleted everything else on there and was only left with the unmastered version of what was to become ‘Memory Maker’.

It’s a good thing too. As I was wandering around the neon-lit streets of Ikebukuro, the music felt like something of a revelation. The use of static and white-noise elements within drone works is nothing new, yet what struck me was his ability to integrate static and noise under the skin of these deeply melodic tones, imbuing the structures with far more depth than I am used to in the genre. Static is such a strong element in his work, The Wire no less, even described listening to Michael’s music as ‘being drunk in a beehive’. I suppose it’s not a bad assessment, so long as you are a very happy, blissful drunk and not too afraid of bees.

Yet apart from the sheer depth of the work of course, is the fact that through simple guitar and sine wave generation, ‘Memory Maker’ carves out something that is at once micro-elemental and yet really quite grandiose. From the first slow clicks that open the album with Alphaville, to the giant crescendo of Slowdance, ending with the beautiful thinly crusted melodies of Hollowing Out, it’s quite some journey. It’s about as beautiful and intelligently made ambient music as you are likely to find, a kind of urban soundtrack if you will. It’s work that certainly accentuated that nightly walk, and continues to be my Tokyo soundtrack today.
