Secret Thirteen mix #002 – Eril Fjord

Secret Thirteen mix #002 – Eril Fjord

http://soundcloud.com/chris-plastic

“Secret Thirteen mix #002” is a masterly improvised live recording that consists of unpublished works created between 2010-2011 by Krisztián Pető under his debuting pseudonym Eril Fjord.

The author of the live act Krisztián Pető – Eril Fjord is a conceptual electronic music artist, based in Budapest, Hungary. This artist, notorious for his membership in Magamura project, is also well known as Chris Plastic for his legendary techno, ambient music sets. By connecting abstract minimalistic rhythms, silky clicks and cinematic atmospheres he is here to express his new alter ego Eril Fjord.

“Secret Thirteen mix #002” is a dynamic and mightily penetrating live recording that proves author’s maturity in technical knowledge and his profound perception of sound itself. By using such hardware like Korg Monotrone, MS-20 Legacy, Kaoss Pad, Yamaha PSS-570, electric guitar he adds an extreme quality mark and individuality to his production. Rhythmical structures of abstract techno connected with numerous motives of styles disclose formulas of experimental sounding while vibrating nebulous spheres covered with glitch effects become an upper layer binding the whole musical installation. There is no need to embed this music into any box of genre because this live act is simply a definite proof of contemporary musical consistency.

“Secret Thirteen mix #002” is a masterpiece that presents a reform in perception of sounding trajectories. It is futuristic, unique production which leads one to explore the unknown distant objects in the universe of sound.

For their 8th release, Time Released Sound is extremely pleased to be bringing you the newest full length from Bernard Zwijzen, aka Sonmi451. With previous releases on U-Cover Ltd and Slaapwel Records, Sonmi451 here delivers an exceedingly delicate tribute to the stars and and to our star system. These softy crystaline and glittering pieces of pure cerebrally gentle electronica reflect perfectly the individual stars that they are named after, and like the night sky, flicker and fade with an ever shifting aura of calming beauty. The perfect soundtrack to an evening out under the night sky!

Innovative electronic conceptualist Matthew Herbert has focussed on the life cycle and death of a pig for his latest album. In accordance with his Personal Contract for the Composition of Music, all the sounds in the album are sampled from field recordings of a single, family-farm raised pig which he followed from its birth through to the butchery process (unfortunately, for the concept's sake, he wasn't allowed to record the slaughter). Notoriously, the project was condemned by PETA before he'd even started arranging the sounds, but we can confirm to any animal lovers that he's been entirely respectful of the one pig and commemorated it's life in a way which we'd imagine will make other pigs quite jealous. Starting in 'August 2009' we follow the pig through it's 26 weeks on earth (industrially reared pigs only get 20 weeks) over the course of the next seven tracks/months, with two further pieces from later dates. The tracks take form as curiously textured pieces of concrete manipulations and more rhythm-driven jaunts, jarring some fairly shocking grunts and piggish exclamations against ghostly pads and clanking percussions resembling some form of abstract but oddly emotive narrative. For further reading check his blog documentation of the process for Matthew's unsentimental and politicised thinking behind the project.

Germany's answer to Daphne Oram or Raymond Scott - or more likely an elaborate wind-up perpetrated by Jan Jelinek, on whose Faitiche label her "archive" recordings sporadically appear - Ursula Bogner is back. Whether or not it's Jelinek behind the Bogner corpus (and I think by now we know the answer to that), there's no disputing the consistently brittle beauty, dizzying complexity and easy charm of her radiophonic constructions. You certainly get a lot of Bogner for your buck on Sonne = Blackbox, with 15 tracks showcasing her brand of primitive electronic composition and tape manipulation. On 'Or Dor Melanor', 'Shepard Monde' and the title track, Broadcast and Stereolab immediately come to mind, while the eerie synthetic ramble of 'Trabant' is like the Ghost Box crew relocated from Belbury to Berlin. There are killers throughout: 'Signalfluss' and particularly 'Uranotypie' with its combo of droning, minimal electronics and Teutonic spoken voice, sound like vital cold wave (cold war?) artefacts, while the playful, impish quality of 'Der Chor Der Oktaven' and 'Permutationen' (before it lapses into a kind of slanted techno groove) invoke the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's John Baker and Delia Derbyshire. If there's a dead giveaway that this is Jelinek's work through and through, it's the heaviness of the sub-bass and the attendant dub-head's sense of space, both hard to imagine in late 60s and early 70s Germany. Whatever you want to believe, make no mistake, this is a truly delightful collection of off-kilter electronic music and quite simply a must for all dedicated heads.

*Limited vinyl pressing of this excellent album where the retro-futurism of Leyland Kirby's "Intrigue & Stuff" series meets classic John Carpenter and the kind of squashed arpeggiated electronics Emeralds are so loved for. Initial copies come on gorgeous transparent green vinyl* The electronic obsessions of the U.S. underground follow the current somewhere darker and literally tranced-out on the first full length album of synth music by Brazilian ex-pat Ricardo Donoso. A background in jazz drumming and as member of avant-metal outfit Ehnare give little indication of what Ricardo has been up to in his own time, which probably couldn't be any further from those disparate styles. 'Progress Chance' is based on the "morning dance music" of raves which Ricardo visited as a youth, namely the Goan and Scandinavian strains of heavily gated and arpeggiated dance music, but he's removed the unwieldy rhythms to leave lushly pulsating patterns and the all-important chord changes which carried all the emotive weight, resulting in something quite unexpected and brilliant. Using only the choicest parts of what for most is simply a "cheesy" genre, Donoso manages to reminded us of Leyland Kirby's opaque approach with the 'Intrigue & Stuff' series or the psychedelic lather of loops in Diamond Catalog's 'Magnified Palette'. boomkat

Debut release from a self described synthaholic from Winnipeg. Unicity utilises an impressive setup of analogue gear ranging from the epic jupiter 6 and MS-10 to spring reverbs and analog delays to create his short and bitter sweet ambient pieces. Aside from using a room full of powered up machines to keep him warm in the Canadian winter months, his analog compositions are an effort to echo his feelings and experiences in life.

A charming suite of six ambient miniatures from Unicity, making a debut appearance on the Analog Quadrant. We could reference a ton of ambient practitioners but these are just pure and simple beatless synthesizer vignettes that express something that just can't be spoken. Quite lovely.

*Initial copies come with a bonus disc of 13 remixes from Part Timer, Matt Elliot, The Remote Viewer, Manyfingers, Ian Hawgood and more* ‘Palestine’, the second album from Arizona duo Tokyo Bloodworm was originally started way back in 2006. The concept behind the record was to drop all electronic or synthesized sounds and go for only original recordings, and this is probably why it’s taken Ryan Keane and R.A. Sanchez so darned long to make the record. Thankfully it’s been worth the wait, and while it might be the final release on the much-loved Moteer label, ‘Palestine’ is a cracking way to celebrate their legacy. With a nod towards the Middle Eastern soundscapes of Muslimgauze as well as a passion for the kind of homespun electronica that came to characterize Moteer, the record is a smart blend of styles; beat driven and pitch black one minute and beautifully introverted the next. Maybe this is down to the very obvious recordings – they were right, the record is mercifully free of the electronic treatments the duo were so adamant to avoid, and the result is something that sounds more akin to latter day Third Eye Foundation or Manyfingers, or possibly even ‘Amelie’ composer Yann Tiersen. ‘Palestine’ is multi-faceted and epic, and with its long list of instrumental collaborators and startling reach through a grab-bag of styles and genres it might just be the best thing to emerge from the Moteer catalogue for some time.

Secret Thirteen mix #001 – Pleq

Secret Thirteen mix #001 – Pleq

“Secret Thirteen mix #001” is a mixed compilation that consists of twelve separate compositions created between 2010-2011 by Bartosz Dziadosz, known as Pleq, and his colleagues from Japan, Canada, Spain and United Kingdom.
Author of the mix Bartosz Dziadosz – Pleq is an electro-acoustic artist, based in Warsaw, Poland. By connecting ambient, glitch and modern classic musical elements, Pleq extracts his sincere individuality. After releasing thirteen albums and being represented in more than thirteen record labels he now can be called a major figure in the academic music scene.

“Secret Thirteen mix #001” is a coherent and thoughtful one hour musical line that definitely proves Bartosz complete musical feeling. Extensive piercing atmospheres are drifting through whole work and gently changing their shapes by assimilating even a rustle sounds. Melancholic wide range melodies submerge in the field of contemporary sound while occasionally emerging sublime cello entries and suddenly varying piano chords bring vitality into selection. These delaying field recordings and subtle effects create a perfect fulfillment to the whole.

Pleq creates a significant journey inside your mind and soul where time does not exist. This is an imperishable monument of intelligent sound from the most promising Poland’s musician.

Conrad Schnitzler & Borngräber & Strüver – Con-Struct CD 201

7 Con-Struct 7 4:45
8 Con-Struct 8 5:08

After two re-releases of Conrad Schnitzler classics, (Zug & Ballet Statique) now m=minimal releases a completely new work from the pioneer of electronic music.
Conrad Schnitzler is a sound explorer. For many years, he has been on expeditions, journeys through his collection of electronic synthesizers almost every day. Sounds he liked has been conserved on tape and stored in his sound library. The result is a huge library of audio files, he calls them “solen”.
“Borngräber & Struever” have got the chance to examine that library and started to con-struct new pieces out of the hidden gems. These are not remixes but new compositions. None of the sound combinations were thought or heard before. The 8 tracks form an album independent of any trend and therefore it becomes a real acoustic environment for everyone.

The album was produced at Studio.Wannsee. To give the album more authenticity, the complete audio processing was done using analog equipment. They not only used many classics among the finest synthesizers and outboard equipment, but also custom built tube gear. The icing on the cake are the tubes used from the 60′s, which bought Christian Borngräber on a trip through the Atacama desert in a small radio repair business in the city of Calama. Thanks to the desert climate even the packaging of the tubes

This is the first of Anthony Rother's more experimental albums which has remained unreleased since 1999. We are proud to finally present this CD as it has this great magic common to every "debut”. The composer collects copious sounds and great ideas which wait for their first appearance. The result is something outstanding...the start of a new direction.
On this release the more experimental ideas meet the elektro sound of Anthony Rother for a great concept album.
Sparse, minimalistic but dense sounds meander into monumental soundscapes, sequenced, melodic lines which more and more meet electronic beats evolving into a highly sophisticated machinery of sound. An excellent and outstanding release.

Cotton wool steam clouds billow, pipe cleaner trees sway and newspaper pigeons take flight as Le Train Fantôme chuffs its way into the curious animated world of Jonny Trunk. Outside the station climb aboard a shoe box taxi and take a trip through the soggy streets of Cardboard Boxford.
And back home again in time for bed.
Pressed on thick heavy vinyl.

Tracklist:
A Le Train Fantôme 3:20
B Cardboard Boxford 3:56

Another tiny package of joy from the proper on-form Ghost Box label, and this time around we find Trunk boss Jonny Trunk on the dials, eking the kind of sounds you’d expect to have found in 1963 on early episodes of Doctor Who from his jaw-dropping cache of samples. You already know that when you get your hands on anything from Trunk it’s gonna be special, but the gritty rhythmic pulse and discordant twang of ‘Le Train Fantome’ is instantly up there with the best the label have thrown out to date. Blending the light-hearted electronic experimentations of Delia Derbyshire with a near concrete sense of sample-laced weirdness that could place it alongside the fabled GRM studios, there’s not enough I can do to recommend that you hear this one LOUD. Flip the record over and we’ve got ‘Cardboard Boxford’, a woozy pizzicato strings ‘n rhythms cut that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Moondog record. Seriously good, seriously strange, seriously limited. Don’t sleep on this one, will ya.

Conrad Schnitzler is without a doubt one of the most important figures in 20th century electronic music. His CV includes a prominent role initiating the seminal Zodiak Free Arts Lab in Berlin circa 1967, essentially creating the nucleus of what would become known as the Kosmische movement. From this he became a founder member of Kluster and collaborated with the likes of Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream, laying the foundations for future generations of Techno and Ambient electronic musicians. It's not often that unreleased material of his comes to the surface, but Further Records have somehow gained access to this 1972 live session, salvaged from cheap old tapes. Considering the time frame, this stuff is just incredible, spanning twelve tracks of signature metallic pulses and starry synth plumes framing his beautifully restrained melodic arrangements. What separates Con from the rest of the crowd, and makes him so important to the development of electronic music and Techno in particular, is that intuitive and engrossing element of restraint and repetition, especially when coupled with his knack for darker, moodier melodies and that brooding sense of space. No hyperbole intended, this is a genuinely exceptional piece of work, easily one of the very best reissues we've encountered in the recent deluge. Mastered by CGB at D&M, Berlin

Having first entered our lives in 2009 with an album so singularly terrifying that it still gives us nightmares, Pepijn Caudron - the elusive mastermind behind Kreng - plunges even deeper into the heart of darkness with a new full-length offering for Miasmah. The results are just phenomenal, combining a palpably European antique grandeur with cutting edge sound design and a pervasive occult charge (a 'grimoire' is a book of spells, don'tcha know). 'Karcist' is the curtain-raiser, wherein ambiguous midnight ambience soon gives way to hands-around-the-throat dread; 'Le Bateleur' is a zombie waltz of baleful clarinet, muted horns and snares flapping like bat's wings. On 'Opkropper', Kreng's neo-classical ambitions swell to the fore, plangent cello lavishly swelling amid Ligeti-style piano jabs and snatches of soprano opera singing that sound like Edith Piaf trapped down a well. 'Petit Grimoire' is the album's seductive highlight, impish strings hanging off a muffled techno pulse, and 'Wrak' is a veritable symphony of things that go bump in the night: shrill violins and discordant woodwind scrapping and scraping over a steadily iterated, Morricone-esque motif. The stately orchestral vibe returns for 'Ballet Van De Bloedhoeren' only to dissolve into a fetid swamp of the sickest drone; 'Girl In A Fishtank' sounds like one of Leyland Kirby and Philip Jeck's clammiest nightmares, a real Death In Venice dirge, its 1920s pomp racked by the threat of cholera, drowning, forbidden lust and war. 'La Poule Noire is a grimm tale with an almost industrial momentum, its reverbed percussion rolling horribly, unstoppably onwards like a steam train to the death factory. Has gothic minimalism ever sounded this vivid, this all-consuming and three-dimensional? Not to our knowledge.

[LINE_050] Seth Horvitz – Eight Studies For Automatic Piano CD (Album) 2011

Seth Horvitz – Eight Studies For Automatic Piano
Label: Line
Catalog#: LINE_050
Format: CD, Album, Limited Edition
Country: US
Released 14 Jun 2011
Genre: Classical
Style: Contemporary

Composed By – Seth Horvitz
Mastered By – Taylor Deupree
Edition of 500.
From the disc's liner notes:
Inspired by the works of James Tenney, György Ligeti, Charlemagne Palestine, and Conlon Nancarrow, "Eight Studies for Automatic Piano" makes use of simple, computer-aided compositional processes to test the limits of human perception and machine precision. It relies on a bare minimum of technical means to explore notions of temporal distortion, iterative process, and elegant complexity. Presented in an immersive concert setting without the presence of a human performer, "Eight Studies" questions traditional notions of live performance and musical "life."
A "Listener's Guide" containing detailed descriptions and visual scores for each piece can be downloaded from www.lineimprint.com/eightstudies.pdf.
All works performed by the Yamaha Disklavier C7 Mark III. Recorded at Littlefield Concert Hall, Mills College,

Tracklist:
1 Study No. 14: Arch Study For The Highest Eight Notes 5:18
2 Study No. 4: Sixteen Diatonic Glissandi Moving At Harmonic Rates 2:22
3 Study No. 2: An Approximate Series Of Approximate Harmonic Series 6:05
4 Study No. 13: Echoes 3:57
5 Study No. 21: Bells 5:20
6 Study No. 1: Octaves, Systematically Filled And Folded 5:46
7 Study No. 29: Tentacles 4:26
8 Study No. 99: Strumming Machine 12:31

Completely brilliant, brain-boxing suite of piano minimalism from Seth Horvitz, inspired by the works of James Tenney, Ligeti, Charlemagne Palestine and Conlon Nancarrow. The aim of Eight Studies was apparently to use simple computer-aided compositional pieces to "test the limits of human perception and machine precision"; it was performed by a Yamaha Disklavier C7 without the presence of a single human being, and recorded live; indeed, it's a work that questions the very nature of "live". It's pointless to go into too much depth about the techniques deployed - the curious can download an in-depth Listener's Guide from the L-ne website - but to take just one example, 'Study No.2: An Approximate Series of Approximate Harmonic Series' finds Horvitz (or at least his electronic avatar) introducing a basic repeating shape and systematically layering it, transposing it, and rhythmically offsetting it against itself. Then, in Reichian style, the length of each repeating shape is incrementally shortened, producing a rhythmic phasing process. It's huge credit to Horvitz that his rigorously mathematical approaches to composing nonetheless yield richly melodic music, lyrical and addictive. Once you've digested this remarkable album, you'll never think of the piano the same way again.

Following last year's devasting UL8 set, Mark Fell returns to Editions Mego for a 2x12" excursion into advanced rhythm mechanics. Back in January 2011, the SND man was invited by Erik 'Errorsmith' Wiegand to create some presets for the Native Instruments soft-synth he was building. In the end, NI rejected Fell's sounds, but their loss is our gain: he's further developed the pattern-Generating systems he used for UL8 and connected them to sounds produced in Wiegand's synthesizer with a result so tantalising you're almost reminded of Wiegand's own classic MMM production 'Donna'. Fell is just at his ballistic best, delivering nine tracks that manage to sound at once coolly scientific whilst also suggesting a kind of mutant, angular rave music. 'Acids In The... thin razor, attack noise hat, Linn' in particular is possessed of an itchy funk that is just completely addictive, while 'Manitutshu' is electro fit to soundtrack a 2045 block party, and 'Manitutshu... parameter set 2, Linn HI Tom, JazzOrg...' pays homage to Duet Emmo (the seminal 80s collaboration between Daniel Miller and Wire's Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis) in a morse code techno style. Don't get us wrong: though playful, this album isn't exactly an easy ride, but for the more adventurous ears out there the rewards are enormous. The set ends with an industrial-strength remix from Fell's SND partner Mat Steel, taking on 'Occultation', a track which in is original form sounds like Richard D. James' Cornish acid focussed into a single, searing laser beam. If you need further incentive, know that Manitutshu was mastered by Lupo at Dubplates and Mastering and is packaged with a A1 full colour poster. Most artists pay lip service to the future, Mark Fell is busy making it happen. Highly recommended.

Kanshin is a two CD compilation album that presents a collection of sound design work from some of the scene's finest artists from across the globe. It has been put together to raise money for the current recovery in Japan following March's earthquake.

As the sensationalist media broadcasters find other things to talk about in the news, a huge recovery operation is still on-going as we speak. Many people have lost everything. So we decided to put together Kanshin so that via Ian Hawgood, 100% of profit from compilation sales will go directly towards the Japan recovery and on-going relief efforts. Ian lives in Japan and his wife is currently working with both the Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support organisation (JEARS)
in Sendai and surrounding areas, as well as the Direct Help for Victims and Animals Rejected from Shelters in Japan group who are going up to areas which are not receiving government support for food, water, basic
supplies, as well as rebuilding and cleaning up. By this means they are able to transport food, clothing and aid directly almost every other weekend and during holidays to areas which are not getting enough or any support.
Ian's wife has also arranged a house as a base in Sendai for volunteers and a temporary home for found animals who are then moved on through JEARS either to foster homes or animal centres. We felt that any funds we can send this way would probably have more of an immediate impact than donating via one of the larger UK charities.

Ian himself has contributed to the compilation in a collaboration with Peter Jørgensen and through 3 hours and some 30 tracks, the line up that comprises this album is surely as exciting as it gets...

Kanshin is curated by Daniel Crossley (Fluid Radio/Fluid
Audio/Facture) and Jonathan Lees (Hibernate/Rural Colours), with invaluable assistance from Ian Hazeldine (Cover art), Wil Bolton (Mastering) and Damian Valles (Digital distribution). This release is made possible by the generosity of all of the artists involved.

We decided to ask a few friends to join a compilation to help raise money. A few quickly became many as we were overwhelmed and warmed by the eagerness of these musicians to get involved.
"For Nihon" features some of the premier names in ambient / experimental music. 100% of the profits from the sale of this album will be donated to the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund set up by New York's Japan Society.
